The first in our new range of plastic kits! Featuring brand new cutting edge moulds and tooling, we have set our sights high and have captured scale proportions and fine detail of these two iconic aircraft in 1/144 scale. Featuring many variant and option parts on the sprues, the kits can be assembled as a number of early Spitfire marks and any of the Bf109 “Emil” series. Additionally, the landing gear can be modelled as lowered or retracted, as well as optional bladeless propeller spinners to represent the aircraft in flight.

To aid painting, die cut canopy masks are included, which fit the Spitfire “blown” style canopy, and the Bf109 late production style canopy. This kit contains high quality waterslide decal markings made by Cartograf, for two aircraft:

  • Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia: N3196 “XT-L,” No. 603 Squadron, RAF Hornchurch, September 1940. Flown by Pilot Officer Gerald “Stapme” Stapleton.

  • Messerschmitt Bf109E-4: W.Nr.1480 “Black Chevron,” Stab2./JG3, France, September 1940. Flown by Oberleutnant Franz Von Werra.

The Battle of Britain produced so many stories of tense aerial dogfights; victories, losses, close calls and unexpected outcomes. Without a doubt, it is in large part because of these stories and the men behind them that the Battle of Britain has been so fascinating to generations that came afterwards. Our Spitfire Mk.I Vs Bf109E dogfight set depicts one of many such stories. On September 5th 1940, Pilot Officer Gerald “Stapme” Stapleton flying his Spitfire Mk.I engaged Oberleutant Franz Von Werra in a Bf109E over Kent. Von Werra was shot down and made a forced landing in a farmer’s field near the village of Winchet Hill. He was unhurt, and was quickly captured by the cook of a nearby army unit! Stapleton was given half the credit for the victory, with the other half awarded posthumously to Flight Lieutenant Paterson Hughes of 234 Squadron, who had likely inflicted damage on Von Werra’s aircraft earlier in combat.
