Until the outbreak of the Second World War, all RAF photo reconnaissance aircraft were of the large bomber type. These soon proved to be vulnerable to Luftwaffe interceptors, and so experimental modifications were made to Supermarine Spitfires by the secret “Heston Flight” led by Acting Wing Commander Sidney Cotton. The radio transmitter and weapons were removed, while extra fuel tanks and camera equipment were fitted. These high speed reconnaissance aircraft were the successful genesis of the Spitfire PR family. The PR Mk.I Type G variant retained its armament, being intended for low altitude operations. In December of 1941, these aircraft were redesignated as the Spitfire PR Mk.VII. A great deal of invaluable intelligence was gathered by Spitfire PR pilots flying dangerous missions over occupied Europe.
The landing gear can be modelled as lowered or retracted, as well as optional bladeless propeller spinners to represent the aircraft in flight.
